It probably started life as a tenant farm, but very quickly converted to winegrowing, producing both white and red wines from the outset. Following a major expansion and a restructuring at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the estate acquired an excellent reputation. The property grew to over 100 hectares before slowly contracting due to the phylloxera crisis and then experiencing a renaissance at the end of the 20th century. When he acquired Château de Sours in 2015, intending to bring about its resurgence, Jack Ma became part of this long history.

Given the property’s historical roots, the major renovation work commissioned had to fully respect the original buildings, which consisted of a “gentleman’s residence” (rather than a chateau) as well as a collection of outbuildings.

When I first visited Bordeaux in 2015, I was amazed by the beauty and tranquility of the landscape and by the magnificence of the culture. I immediately fell in love with it and wanted to be part of this world. Today, I am fortunate and honoured to be the owner of Château de Sours. I am still a newcomer to this land and I want to keep learning. The people here don’t just make wine, they bring the world happiness. Today, the values of quality, culture and authenticity that Bordeaux wines embody are recognised and loved by wine lovers around the world and will remain so in the future.

An estate with considerable potential
We want to achieve recognition for the chateau and its wines. This is my mission and that of my team: to put the wine back at the very heart of the estate’s vision. I therefore started with a technical project: to leverage the diversity of the vineyard, to showcase our climats, to make the most of our exceptional plots, to take our agroecological approach in the vineyards to the next level, to seek precision.
